Cortlandt (Cortlandt Manor) Town Court
The Town was incorporated in 1788 and is composed of 34.5 square miles with a population of roughly 37,000. Noteworthy features include the Croton-Harmon railroad station and yard, a major hub for the Hudson line of the Metro-North Railway, and Croton Dam, one of the largest hand hewn dams in the world, both located in Croton-on-Hudson. Cortlandt Manor is home to the Hudson Valley Medical Center and Blue Mountain Reservation. The Cortlandt Town Center Shopping Center is located in Mohegan Lake. Montrose houses the sprawling campus of the FDR Veteran's Hospital. Verplanck hosts a very large and popular Italian Festival each year sponsored by the Mount Carmel Society. Buchanan has the dubious distinction of being the home of the Indian Point Energy Center with its three unit nuclear power plant.
Cortlandt is serviced by three local courts: The Cortlandt Town Court located at 1 Heady Street, Cortlandt Manor, New York, 10567, (914) 734-1090, the Croton-on-Hudson Village Court and the Buchanan Village Court. The busiest of these is the Cortlandt Justice Court. It meets twice each week for general calendars and covers matters occurring everywhere in the Town of Cortlandt except for within the two villages. The Croton-on-Hudson Village Court meets once a week and the Buchanan Justice Court meets once a month.
Cortlandt (Cortlandt Manor, Crugers, Verplanck and part of Mohegan Lake) is patrolled mostly by the New York State Police and the Westchester County Police. Croton-on-Hudson and Buchanan each have their own village police forces. The crime index (risk of crime) in Cortlandt Manor is less than that for Westchester County as a whole and only one-fifth as high as the U.S. generally. The crime index is slightly less than Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson and slightly more than Cortlandt Manor in Buchanan. The majority of crimes handled in the local courts are DUI/DWI (driving under the influence or driving while intoxicated), assault, harassment, petit larceny, unlicensed operation and trespass.
